If you're not the third, can you beget the 4th? eg,: my brother is John III but doesn't want to carry on the name. If I name my son John, will/can he be john IV?

Sure, but isn't this carry on the name thing a little silly? Don't you want success for your son & isn't the only real success what brings happiness to him on his terms, not his ancestors? Pass him the family traditions that matter & give him a new name & freedom to start new traditions.
