Why is it so hard for the general population to help others?

Evolution favors survivors so of course people focus on themselves. We do have a self- interest a very human attribute to work that all out, outside of our immediate family & social circle. It's just too complex for our animal nature, the gut instinct that tells us to eat a whole box of cookies or love the wrong person. To get people to help others, convince them to use their head.
