This is too complex for the inner chimp that is your gut instinct. Meet some people who’ve achieved the dream you’re seeking & get a reality check on what you need. If you already know ( or can quickly figure out ) your thesis direction, love academia, PhD in for you. It will be the worst research of your life. Just do it & move on ! If you’re just drifting, a PhD is terribly unstructured. consider a masters !
